Meet the designer Richard Cooke with wife and business partner Christy Cooke, President
Life-long musician and Grammy award winner, Richard Cooke creates a new kind of music through a unique line of outdoor instruments. His ensembles include a variety of percussion instruments that make playing music easy for all. The beauty in Cooke’s designs goes beyond just making noise; they create high quality tones that meld into beautiful songs.
Freenote’s Harmony Park uses harmony-based scales so the notes played on different instruments will blend together effortlessly. The designs of these instruments are also simplified so difficult coordination isn’t required to play.
As a child, it was piano, voice and trumpet that set a foundation for Richard’s passion. In college, he discovered the art of playing music by ear when he taught himself to play the flute. Something came alive with this freedom of expression, so Richard continued in that study. He joined the Paul Winter Consort, one of America’s premier jazz ensembles, and worked with Paul to design an adult music camp. Here, he began his research to build an instrument that could make music easy and enjoyable for all to play.
He traveled widely and studied the art within many cultures. The beautiful gamelan instruments of Java and Bali have been inspiration for Richard’s designs. His life work is brought to you through the ensembles of Freenote’s Harmony Park instruments you see today.
